Gates of Swaroop Sagar Lake Opened for Cleansing

The gates of Swaroop Sagar lake were opened to clean up the water body. The department of irrigation carried out the action.

The gates were lifted around 4 inches today for about 15 minutes to clear up the water of Lake Swaroop Sagar before fresh water comes in with the rains.

Monsoon has already knocked the doors in the region. Though, not a lot of rainfall has been received yet, but the administration is taking no chances in preparing for the upcoming season.

Ashok Babel, executive engineer of irrigation department provided the above information.

New Guidelines for Lake Conservation, Former Secretary Visits Udaipur Lakes

The works of lake conservation which was going on under National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) will now be controlled by National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-systems (NPCA).

Don’t Transform Lakes into Swimming Pool: Experts Speak on World Biological Diversity Day

conferenceOn the occasion of World Biological Diversity Day, a conference was held at Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic College on the subject of Water and Biological Diversity.

Many renowned Environmentalists, Social Activists, Lake Conservators and Educationists from the city participated in the event and shared their views on the biological diversity in Udaipur region.

The conference summarized the collective viewpoint on ecological imbalance caused due to destruction of water bodies.

Exemplifying the Ayad River’s current scenario, experts said that the river is subjected of illegal encroachment and pollution, besides this, the constant dropping of water level in lakes raises the threat to biological diversity of the ancient river of Udaipur.

Seminar was organized in the joint association of Forest Conservator (North), Nature wing of Vidya Bhawan, Mohan Singh Mehta Memorial Trust and India Water Partnership. [Read more...]

Apart from the Great Palaces and multi star hotels at Pichola, the whole lake area including the famous ghats have been revamped by the film crew of Raam Leela. The ghats have turned golden with the sparkling lights reflecting in the lake water.

UMC starts Cleaning the Lakes once again

Rapidly increasing water pollution in the lakes of Udaipur has finally awaken the administration. Udaipur Municipal Council has decided to spend Rs. 37 lakhs on the process of cleaning all the lakes over an year in three sessions with 50 labors.

Today, around 20 labors were seen pulling out Hyacinth and solid waste from Swaroop Sagar. Following a recently passed tender of cleaning by UMC, as per clauses mention in allotted tender, the process will be carried out in three phases covering all water bodies of the city.

In first phase, Swaroop Sagar, Fateh Sagar, Upla Talab, Nayi Puliya till Fateh Sagar would be cleaned by 20 workers, while in second phase, Rang Sagar, Kumhariya Talab and Pichola lake would be included. In the final phase, Dudh Talai and Jalbhurg will be cleaned.

Swaroop Sagar: A Forgotten Corner

Udaipur is known for its lakes which cover more than 45% city’s area, a major reason why the city is better known as City of Lakes or Venice of East. Tourist from across the globe come here to enjoy the embedded beauty and peaceful atmosphere. But this might not continue for long as the condition of the lakes have been deteriorating at an immeasurable speed.

Almost all the lakes in and around city are manmade and were build by the ruler’s of Mewar with a sole view of conservation of water. One such lake, located within the city area, is Swaroop Sagar lake build by Maharana Swaroop Singh (1842-1861).

Swaroop Sagar, also known as Kumhariya Talab, serves as the connecting water body between Lake Fateh Sagar and Lake Pichola. It was build to avoid flood like situation and maintain high water level in the adjoining lakes. [Read more...]

Should we take Responsibility of Cleaning of Lakes: Municipal Council

parishad-meetMunicipal Council Udaipur (MCU) Board Meeting called upon discussion on “Prashasan Shehron Sangh” stuck on the burning issue of the Lakes.

MCU’s board meeting was totally diverted on the issue, Should MCU assume the responsibility of cleaning of the lakes? Paras Singhvi (BJP) suggested that we should divided the Lakes into three parts and issue tenders for cleaning accordingly, like Fatehsagar and Swaroop Sagar Part I, Dudhtalai and Pichola Part II and Rang Sagar and end of Fatehsagar near Sheraton Hotel as Part III.

Singhvi also targeted Divisional Commissioner, for his regular visits to Fatehsagar. Paras said, “DC only has concerns for Fatehsagar and not for the other lakes”.

He added that Council has Rs. 1 crore budget for the development of Ayad River. [Read more...]
