Despite Section-144, which prohibits any gathering, mass protest or demonstration in public places, being imposed in Udaipur, a large number of people from the Muslim community gathered outside the Hathipol Police Station today morning demanding the immediate release of Farukh Hussain secretary of Anjuman Committee, Udaipur.

Further, in a minor clash between police and protestors, a few people were arrested and one policeman was injured. All shops around the old city area, mainly Hathipol, Chandpol, Ashiwini Bazar and Chetak were closed till late afternoon.

Farukh Hussain was arrested last night (21 November), for his alleged involvement in encouraging riots,  He was later released on bail today.

His arrest gave a new unwanted direction to the whole ‘Facebook’ post mass protest which started 2 days back when an abusive anti-Islamic picture was posted on the social networking site. (full report here)

Anti Islamic Post on Facebook: Sec 144 imposed in Udaipur, Bandh Canceled

Udaipur police have imposed Section 144 in the city after a mass protest by people of the Muslim community at the Mukherjee Chowk and Anjuman neighborhood on Sunday evening, 20 Nov 2011 in retaliation to the explicit anti-Islamic graphics posted on the social networking site Facebook.

Earlier, the Anjuman Committee had proposed a bandh on Tuesday 22, November 2011 if the Police failed to arrest the culprit. However, after a joint meeting with Udaipur Collector Hemant Ghera the bandh has been cancelled.

“Since the said offense is not made from Udaipur city and due to technical obstacles it is not possible to trace the culprit in the given deadline of 24 hours. An FIR is already lodged by the Muslim community and we are investigating the case” said Hemant Ghera, while addressing the meeting today with various Muslim groups and organizations. Thousands of Muslims protest over abusive Facebook update

muslim-protestThousands of Muslims gathered at Anjuman, Mukherjee Chowk on Sunday evening to express their unhappiness, anger and objection over the recent abusive graphical image of Islamic Pilgrimage Ka’aba, Mecca that was spread on social networking site Facebook.

Amid tight police security, number Muslim men, both young and old protested and demanded for strict action against the culprit(s), which it is alleged, was through an unknown user account made from Bikaner, Rajasthan to spread the insulting pictures of the only Islamic Holy place, Ka’aba.

Maulana Zul-kar-Nain, Head Imam of the Anjuman Mosque, Mukherjee Chwowk, Udaipur has said that in the joint meeting of Imams of Mosques all across Udaipur and the state of Rajasthan, the administration has been requested to take necessary action against the mischief makers, failing which the community will take to protests, and any development subsequent to such protest will not be the responsibility of the community or the various associations across the city and state.
