Priyanka Jain: Carving Life in Stones

God has given life to every living creature in this world like us, the human beings, but stones are naturally lifeless. However, some people are talented enough to give life even to a stone. 26 year old Priyanka Jain of Udaipur has this ability.

When an average career conscious girl of her age dreams of getting a fair entry into the corporate world, Priyanka doesn’t really care about that, she is whole set with her instruments to carve a lifeless stone into a shape of life.

She is a born artist with bundle of talent and abilities to stand strong in the field of sculpture art which itself is an uncommon field, especially for a girl.

Priyanka is pursuing her PhD. in Temple Art. She holds a Masters Degree in Visual Art and Bachelors in Arts from B.N. College. She has created more than 13 stone sculpture artifacts since 2007, more than 30 clay artifacts, 100s of paintings, graphics and various other forms of arts.

Priyanka’s passion for sculpture art is beyond words or in other words, it’s the excellence of her work that her each artifact tells its own story.

Priyanka, how it all started?

I was interested in drawing & painting since childhood, I used to draw different paintings although 2-dimensional art never intimidated my inner perception, I was more fascinated to a detailed form of art. One day I explored sculpture making and I said in my heart, that’s what I was looking for since ages, a perfect 4-dimensional art. And the journey began.

Who is your idol?

My idol is Ms. Meena Baya she is an artist, painter and lady with a broader inner glance for arts. She taught me how to pour out the deep inner feelings of an artist by his art. Ms. Baya is also helping me in my Ph.D. in temple art. Much of the credits also go to Takhman Art Center and my teacher Mr. Dinesh Upadhya for his valuable teachings, I also met many superb artists there like Mr. Lokesh. There are many people who inspired me from time to time. I believe that’s the life of every artist, inspiration is always required to give your best.

What is your perspective about future of Sculpture Art?

Art is present in this world since the evolution of human being. Yes, it evolved from time to time and divided into various forms and shapes. But neither the artists disappeared nor the art enthusiasts. People today are art literate and they love to be around with arts, like decorating their beautiful interiors with artifacts, paintings, sculptures etc. The sculpture art has its own place and value. I definitely see a bright future for both sculpture artists and art.

What you could have been if not a sculpture artist?

It may sound funny to you but I never thought anything other than art since I came into my senses. I just love being an artist. If I would not be a sculpture artist then I might have ended up as any other artist. But, I cannot detach myself from art. My passion for art is something which keeps me going, but like any other human being I too like to earn both fame and money. But, art always comes first.

What do you think about Udaipur and Sculpture Art?

Udaipur has many great artists but like any other place we also have advantages and disadvantages. Like, we cannot get exposure on higher level and because of this we several times miss what’s going on in sculpture art in other side of the world. But, in Udaipur we can easily get different types of stones like pink, white, granite, sandstone and black marble etc, used in sculpture making which is not that easily available in metro cities.

How one can become a successful artist?

The first most required attribute of any artist is his clear vision; you cannot come out with a great result without having a strong mental picture, with understanding of balancing and composition.  Sketching comes next, that’s the only way to draw an outline of your art, no matter what your art is. Then comes innumerable patience, self confidence and last but not the least a passion for art. These are some of the most needed qualities every good artist should carry with him.

What is your dream?

Though I participated in various events and exhibitions in Udaipur and outside but I never got a chance to present my solo exhibition. I wish one day I will display my art work solely. It is my dream to become a well known sculpture artist of the world.

Did your family help you?

On that part, I think I am the luckiest girl in this world. My family which consist of my parents and two brothers, today whatever I am doing is because of their trust and support for me. Their encouragement helped me to fight with every day challenges I face as a female artist in a male oriented field. My father accompany me everywhere I go to participate in exhibitions outside Udaipur, he used to carry my artifacts which weigh at least 10-20 kgs. Though he complains sometimes but he never turned back from supporting me. I am thankful to my family for their endless cooperation

How do you define art?

Its own an individual’s thinking how he defines art. I take it as a treatment for frustration, depression or any mental stress. I might sometimes lose words to express my feelings but my art always speaks my true emotions.
