The mid-winter festival of Lohri was celebrated in Udaipur today with all its excitement and devotion; the event comprised with all religious and traditional activities performed by the city’s Punjabi/Sikh community as well as the strong Sindhi community who equally observe the festival with devotion.
The celebration of Lohri starts early in the morning with the preparation of food stuffs. By evening, Lohri reached its pinnacle with Ardas in Guru Dwara, distribution of Prasad and lastly the bonfire.
Tejinder Singh Robin, President of Sachha Khand Darbar Samiti of Guru Dwara Sachha Khand Darbar said “the lohri is a festival of joy and harmony; this is a time to remove all personal differences and create a calm and friendly environment.”
At around 8pm in the night; hundreds of community members including women and children gathered outside the Sikh Colony, Udaipur to observe the bonfire, which is one of the most important Lohri rituals.
Sindhi’s follow some very similar rituals – the city’s Jhulelal Temple at Jawahar Nagar has observed the mass prayer on the occasion.
Lohri is followed by another festival of Makar Sakranti on 14-15th January 2012 which has its own religious and social significance.
