singhara1

Fruits are always termed as juicy, sweet and it takes large part of consumption by both man and animals. Most of us love to eat fruit just because of its taste and the feeling of refreshment it generates. Needless to know its health benefits, we just love to grasp our favorite fruit.

Singhara, a seasonal fruit has different story, it doesn’t look appealing, nor does it taste ‘very juicy’. Annoyingly, it often leaves black color in our hands. Yet apart from its OFFs, it has a number of ‘ONs’ as well.

English name, Water Caltrop, Singhara is an absolute seasonal fruit, mostly available after rainy season till the start of winter. [Read more...]

[Food Review] A Silent Retreat at Hariyali Restaurant

Seating

In the left bend of the perpendicular lane down the Gulab Bagh is located a beautiful cozy restaurant by the name, Hariyali. Most of the localites already recognize the restaurant and its name is marked in the list of favorites of many among them.

Hariyali restaurant is an open garden plus a dining hall venture, featuring a mini playground for the active kids. The kitchen is well away from the seating area and the cleanliness is an asset that registers at first sight.

We were two of us and immensely chatty that day. We talked to the manager as we ordered the food. To be frank, we only wanted to know when they do start preparing Gajar Ka Halwa and which are the best weeks to enjoy it. In our defense: it’s a dish that’s very rare to find in a Menu! [Read more...]

The past food v/s The fast food

burger

Simulate the very moment when tour tongue takes a roll on seeing a plate full of French fries or a big slice of your favorite cheese pizza. Tough moments. Aren’t they?

After cherishing those few moments on your lips, you blame the famous Santosh Pani Puri wala of Gulab Bagh for that extra ounce. Not fair. Your admonishing is not at all warranted on that poor chap.

So yes, the whole point is, of all the above mentioned drama is that fast food or let’s call it fun food has become quite an essential part of our lifestyle. With the big food outlets like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut and Subway, etc. venturing into Udaipur, the situation might just aggravate more. Although, like everything, there are pros and cons of it too.

How many people would be eager to eat an Aloo Tikki or a Chicken bucket? And how many are in for a more desi version of it at the legendary Rehmaniya hotel?

In a recent random check done on Facebook itself, it was found that half of the people would obviously want to dine at a more clean and sophisticated place at KFC instead of those old eateries.

Tanisha Bhanawat, who is an engineering student, says, “I love eating at McDonalds. It is cleaner. More hygienic and I do not have to worry about the flies and dirt swarming on my food.” [Read more...]

Purohit Cafe: Fervid Dosas, Cool Showers

It had been such a long time since I had my last Dosa in Udaipur. South Indian joints are rarely good, someone suggested Cafe Purohit, and, off I went to alleviate my condition.

I had also taken along a South Indian friend of mine. Generally, a south indian’s word can be taken very sincerely, when it is about the cuisine he has grown up eating.

Cafe Purohit is a small basement cafeteria cum restaurant adorning the belly of complex- Anand Plaza on University road. The entrance is adjacent to the wash basins and the kitchen extended, so, when we approached the entrance we were greeted with the entrancing smell of freshly prepared Sambhar. [Read more...]

The Taste of Culture was bit Apprehensive

taste-of-cultureIf you travel down the borderline of St. Paul’s in Bhopalpura you’ll happen to cross a beautiful garden restaurant popularly known as Taste of Culture (Veg and Non-Veg). If you happen to be me, you just can’t cross it.

You somehow will find yourself seated at one of the tables, eager to flip through the menu, looking forward to having a good time.

The main gate of the restaurant opens up to a huge lawn with tables (for four) strewn across in a thoughtful pattern embellished with a fountain at the exact centre. It wasn’t on at noon, which was when I had visited the restaurant, but its presence made the green carpet look good.

The restaurant dining area is divided in 5 parts: The main hall, two private huts, one discotheque cum dining hall, the garden and two tables under a small shed overlooking the garden. [Read more...]

Motor Dining: The Changing Food Trend

delhi-darbar-vanBlame it on the rise of modernization that the city has been subjected to, but a significant change has been observed in the lifestyle of Udaipurites with their consistent social activities witnessing a steady reformation. Be it fashion, entertainment or food, Udaipur is making rapid strides on the path of absorbing the new cosmopolitan spirit.

The popular street food culture has not remained untouched with this twist of revolution either. The traditional roadside food joint installed on the wheel cart (thela) are now shifting on well equipped vans and mini-trucks.

Nearly half a dozen of mobile food joints have mushroomed in the past few months in the city, serving food, snacks and juices at different corners of the city.

Out of many of these adorned vehicles, one is Delhi Darbar, parked outside Lok Kala Mandal and serves Mughlai and Awadhi delicacies till late at night.

Nearly a month old, Delhi Darbar was started by Masroor Ahmed who had his hands full, managing several city restaurants and hotels before he finally landed on the idea of installing a matador into a takeaway cum eatery. [Read more...]
