City Goes Dark for an Hour

power_cuts1Udaipur city witnessed an hour long power cut in the early hours of Sunday 19th May, distressing citizens. The power cut was caused by a technical fault that occurred at the Debari Power Station.

While Udaipur is going through its harshest climate, the power cut has added to the misery of the citizens.

According to Suresh Sharma, JEN, AVVNL, Udaipur, a technical slipup at the Debari Power Station last night resulted in an Hour long power cut across the city. Sharma informed that whole city is divided into Four sub-stations which receives supply from Debari.

Scrap Auction Disturbs College exam

college-campusWhile MLSU students were trying to concentrate on their question paper, nearly a dozen contractors gathered outside the examination room to take part in the scrap auction.

Disturbed by the loud voices students started protesting and called other students, including student leaders, to stop the auction.

The incident took place at College of Arts (MLSU) where exam of Second-Year Political Science was going on.

Student leader, Dinesh Bhoi with other students, forcibly stopped the auction. This resulted in a heated argument between contractors and students. MLSU professors intervened and controlled the situation. The auction has been postponed.

Air Ticket agents on Strike

no-ticketingAir Ticketing has been adversely affected in Udaipur today after TAAI (Travel Agents Association of India) laid a nationwide one-day strike against airlines for zero commission policy and other issues causing hindrance to air tickets booking agents.

40 agents of Udaipur kept their businesses closed today and no air ticket was booked.

“Airlines are asking travel agents to take commission from travelers which will be an additional burden on customers”, says Mahadev Damani, president of Air Travel Agent Association of Udaipur. [Read more...]

Air Travel Agents Association to keep ‘Shutters Down’

With the aim of demonstrating protest against policies of major Airlines and to demand appropriate commission and transparency airfares the Air Travel Association of Udaipur has announced to participate in the nationwide strike on 7th May.

The Association members have pledged to keep their ‘Shutters Down’ on Tuesday and no air tickets will be booked on that day.

According to the members of the Udaipur Air Travel Agents Association, in the past few months policies of all major airlines has changed to the disadvantage of agents where the travel agents are denied of any commissions on bookings, moreover they complained for lack of transparency of airfares as there is huge difference between rates available on online portals vis-a-vis rates given to the agents. Forgotten Heroes: Firefighters of Udaipur

fire-fightersWhile the world was honoring Fire Fighters today on the occasion of International Firefighters Day (IFFD), Udaipur’s fire fighters were found unfamiliar with any such event going on.

Also, the Municipal Corporation who heads fire department was uninterested in dedicating the day to the daredevils, who often risk their lives to save ours.

Protest continues over Sarabjit Singh’s assassination

Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner assassinated in Pakistan Jail, was cremated at his ancestral village Bhikhiwind with complete state honor. Sarabjit, who was on death row and lodged at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, following a brutal attack by fellow inmates.

Series of protests and demonstration were reported from all over country against the alleged indolent conduct of Indian administration in handling Sarabjit’s case with Pakistan. Protestors also accused Pakistan of killing Sarabjit in retaliation of Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru’s hanging by Indian authority. [Read more...]

Double Minded Corporation, Community Centers at Stake

umcAmongst various developmental works enlisted for Udaipur Municipal Corporation (UMC) one is construction and development of Community Centers around town, however the double minded UMC on one hand claims that these centers are incurring losses for department, whereas on other hand is initiating construction of new such centers around town; while regular maintenance and care-taking of available centers is still a big question mark.

According to an official source, there are around 56 community centers in various parts of city, but the corporation has officially rented only 20 such centers, the rest are being occupied either by residents of respective colonies/localities or has been considered as private property of influential people. Ayad River Development to cost Rs. 907 Crores

As per the recently submitted interim Detail Project Report (DPR) by Wapcos Consultants Company, nearly Rs. 907 crores needs to be spent on proposed development of Ayad River. Representatives of the company met with UIT Chairman, Roop Kumar Khurana, after their survey of various areas en route the 26 kms. long stretch of the river.

In the meeting today, UIT Chairman suggested to install small water treatment plants on empty government lands on both sides of the river, along with parks and gardens to make it scenic from tourism point of view.

S.R. Sahran of Wapcos Company informed that the final DPR of this project will be provided by June 2013, in which the design of treatment plant and overview of garden space along the river stretch will be explained. [Read more...]
